Types of Master's Degree

UNITEN Master's degree programmes are categorised into Structure A, Structure B and Structure C. The master's degree programme prepares candidates for a variety of positions such as consultant, researcher, lecturer, middle and top management in private and government organisations.

Structure A is by full research and applicants must prepare and submit a research proposal together with their application form. Master's programmes offered under Structure A are:

  • Master of Electrical Engineering
  • Master of Mechanical Engineering
  • Master of Civil Engineering
  • Master of Information Technology
  • Master of Industrial Science

Full-Time
Registered and present for all 3 semesters per year

Part-Time
Registered and fulfilling a residential requirement of at least 10 working days a year



Structure B
is by coursework and research. The distribution between the coursework and dissertation is about 50%. Programmes which are offered under Structure B are Master of Electrical Engineering, Master of Mechanical Engineering and Master of Information Technology.

    Full-Time
    Registered and present for at least 12 credit hours in each of Semesters I & II, and at least 3 credit hours in Semester III

    Part-Time
    Registered and present for at least 12 credit hours in each of Semesters I & II, with a minimum of 1 credit hour


    • Master of Electrical Engineering (MEE) The Programme consists of 3 core courses and 4 elective courses.
      • The 3 core courses are:

      • The 4 elective* courses can be chosen from the following list of courses:

      Structure C
      are programmes which consist of coursework plus a project paper. Only Master in Engineering Management and Master of Business Administration are offered under this structure.

      • Master in Engineering Management (MEM)
        • This is a special programme designed for technically qualified executives holding technical degrees in management positions. The programme will equip them with knowledge in business management concurrently with their technical knowledge in selected technical areas. Candidates attending this programme must take 8 core business courses i.e.

        • Candidates are then required to take 3 electives* from the following list of courses:

        • This is a general MBA programme. It is open to all graduates in related fields, preferably those with a few years of management experience. Students need to take 11 core courses which are as follows:

      • Mastersof Electronics and Systems Engineering (MESE) 
        • The Master of Electronics Systems Engineering (MESE) is the latest Master Degree programme offered by Universiti Tenaga Nasional (UNITEN). It has been approved by the Ministry of Higher Education on 16 March 2011 (reference number: N/523/7/0019 (KA11463)). The MESE programme is offered to both full-time and part time students. It can be completed in 1.5 years (full time) to 3 years (part time).
        • The programme structure consists of core courses, elective courses and a MESE project. The core courses provide students with a solid foundation in the functional area of electronics systems engineering in preparing for more advanced studies at the elective level. At the elective level, students have the freedom to select courses in both electronics and communication systems engineering. For the MESEs project, students have the opportunity to apply what has been learned in the taught courses and conduct high level experiments in several ways such as surveys, simulations, creating models, programming, design and implementation of work models relevant to electronics systems engineering. Students need to take 4 (12 Credit Hours) core courses and Project (7 Credit Hours) which are as follows:
          • Advanced Digital Signal Processing
          • Advanced Semiconductor Devices
          • Quality and Reliability Engineering
          • Research Methodology
          • Project and Continuous Presentation
        • After completing the core courses, candidates need to choose 4 to 6 electives* from Group A Courses and 1 to 3 electives* from Group B Courses:
          • Group A Courses (Electronics Systems Engineering)

      • Master of Communication Systems Engineering (Structure C) 
        • The Master of Electronics and Systems Engineering (MCSE) is the latest Master Degree programme offered by Universiti Tenaga Nasional (UNITEN). It has been approved by the Ministry of Higher Education (reference number: N/523/7/0038). The MCSE programme is offered to both full-time (1.5 to 3 years) and part time students (2.5 to 4 years).
        • The programme structure consists of core courses, elective courses and a MCSE project. The core courses provide students with a solid foundation in the functional area of communication systems engineering in preparing for more advanced studies at the elective level. At the elective level, students have the freedom to select courses in both communication and electronics systems engineering. For the MCSEs project, students have the opportunity to apply what has been learned in the taught courses and conduct high level experiments in several ways such as surveys, simulations, creating models, programming, design and implementation of work models relevant to electronics systems engineering.
        • Students need to take 4 (12 Credit Hours) core courses and Project (7 Credit Hours) which are as follows:
          • Optical Fibre Communications
          • Digital Communications Systems
          • Mobile and Cellular Communications
          • Research Methodology
        • After completing the core courses, candidates need to choose 4 to 7 electives* from Group X Courses and 0 to 3 electives* from Group Y Courses:
          • Group X (Communication Systems Engineering)
            • Radio-Frequency Electronics and Circuit Design
