Department of Engineering Sciences and Mathematics > Introduction

The Department of Engineering Sciences and Mathematics provides courses in fundamental sciences and mathematics to foundation students of both the College of Engineering and College of Information Technology. The outline of these courses in mathematics, physics and chemistry are designed to ensure the students are well equipped with strong science and mathematics foundations before they can proceed to their respective degree programmes.

Presently, the department offers 11 mathematics, 7 physics and 3 chemistry courses. Most of the courses offered are designed to help engineering, computer science and information technology students to prepare themselves for more advanced courses in engineering, computer science and information technology at degree programmes. For the mathematics courses, the courses that are offered for the engineering students at degree levels are Advanced Calculus and Analytic Geometry, Differential Equations, Linear Algebra and Statistics for Engineers. The rest of the mathematics courses are offered for foundation programmes students. Students pursuing the engineering and computer science programmes are required to take Introduction to Calculus and Analytic Geometry, Calculus and Analytic Geometry I, and Calculus and Analytic Geometry II during the foundation year. For physics courses at foundation programme, the students will learn mechanics, fluid mechanics and wave oscillations in Physics I, electricity and electromagnetism in Physics II, and thermodynamics, waves, optics and modern physics in Physics III. In addition, students will also be exposed to computer data acquisition in physics laboratory courses. All the engineering foundation students are also required to take Chemistry I and Chemistry II courses, in addition to one chemistry laboratory course. Besides, the department also offers dedicated courses in mathematics and physics at foundation programme to cater the computer science and information technology students.

The department has three physics and two chemistry laboratories. All the laboratories are air-conditioned and equipped with the state-of-the-art equipment. Laboratory classes are conducted either by lecturers themselves or tutors who are closely supervised by the lecturers. In addition, the department has two research laboratories and one computing laboratory for lecturers, postgraduate students and final year engineering students to conduct various research activities related to science and mathematics disciplines.
