Doctor of Philosophy (Engineering)

Doctor of Philosophy (Engineering) is a full research program where candidates are given unique opportunity to follow their interest in a specialized area of research (including major research areas of electrical, electronics, mechanical and civil engineering) for 3-7 years and make an important academic contribution to the knowledge of chosen research area. Prospective candidates are future researchers / academicians in universities and / or research institutions, R&D Engineers, Engineering Specialists and Technoprenuers.
- A master’s degree in the field or related fields accepted by the UNITEN Senate; or
- Other qualifications equivalent to a master’s degree recognised by the Government of Malaysia.
- Candidates without a related qualification in the field/s or working experience in the relevant fields must undergo appropriate prerequisite courses determined by the HEP.
- For international students: Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) score of 500 or International English Language Testing System (IELTS) score of 5.0 or its equivalent.
A bachelor’s degree with the following conditions:
- A bachelor's degree in the field or related fields with first-class (CGPA of 3.67 or higher) or its equivalent from an academic or Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) programme;
- Undergo internal assessment; and
- Any other requirements of the HEP.
Bachelor’s degree candidates who are registered for master’s degree programmes may apply to convert to the doctoral degree programmes subjected to the following conditions:
- Within 1 year for full time and within 2 years for part-time candidates;
- Having shown competency and capability in conducting research at doctoral level through rigorous internal evaluation by the HEP; and
- Approval of the HEP Senate.
STRUCTURE A PROGRAMME
The program can be completed within 3-7 years for full-time candidates and 4-7 years for part-time candidates. Candidates who enroll in this program are required to register for the following courses:

The Doctor of Philosophy (Engineering) programme prepares its graduates for a wide variety of career path. This programme involves undertaking specialized advanced research in a chosen traditional engineering discipline, namely, mechanical, electrical power, civil and electronics and communication engineering based on the student’s academic qualification. On completion of the programme, students have necessary skills for both research and publishing skills.
Traditionally, the academic world is the destination of a PhD holder. However, a PhD holder has also a much higher chance of obtaining a high-ranking job in an organization or a company. Our graduates have found employment in the academic sectors, as lecturers and professors, as well as, advancing their career in research institutions, organizations and companies, as research engineers, consulting engineer, manager, as well as, heading the organization.
