Research Scope

Running physical system simulations(electrical and mechanical) in real time environment and non real time environments. Making use of hardware in the loop in order to test equipment with digital twins that emulate real life systems or plants in real time simulation platforms such as the Opal-RT, Speedgoat, Typhoon and Simulink Desktop Realtime. Modelling faults in simulation environment to research on fault behavior in power systems. Signal processing of CT and VT readings for fault studies purposes.

Happenings in Group

1.    Emanual fault model and Hiedler model parameter identification for a given fault.

2.    Communication channels used for hardware in the loop on different real time simulation platforms.(UDP, TCP/IP)

3.    Interfacing between different real time simulation platforms.

4.    Parameter sweep for physical simulations using parallel processing toolbox in matlab and Simulink.

5.    Multiple machine parameter sweep using parallel processing toolbox and onedrive.

6.    Multicore simulations to avoid overrun in real time simulations using speedgoat and artiemes in Opal-RT

7.    Protection relay model in real time environment using Simulink Desktop Realtime and testing using Opal-RT or Speedgoat.

Research

(Notable Projects and Achievement)

None yet. Hoping for the institute to make use of the expertise and the equipment the lab has to offer. Getting to know the real time simulators and the relevant useful matlab toolboxes. For now using the equipment in the lab for a project with TNB grid in fault classification namely the AFCA project.

The Opal-RT. A real time simulation target with 16 cores. Has 6 ethernet ports and unique IP addresses. One is used for communication with the host PC. Has 64 channels of analog input and 64 channels of analog output ports together with 64 channels of digital input and 64 channels or digital output. Development PC runs on RT-Lab and communicates with Matlab via Emega-Sim and Artiemes.

The Speedegoat. A real time simulator which 2 ethernet ports for hardware in the loop purposes and one designated ethernet port to communicate with the host PC. Has 2 serial ports for UART communication purposes. Development PC runs on Simulink Realtime.

16 core workstation used to run parameter sweeps. Uses matlab parallel processing toolbox and communicates with other PC via one drive of the lab manager to accelerate multiple simulation process.
