Smart (and Safe) Education : UNITEN Virtual Learning
Teaching and learning will continue through Virtual Learning mode for Interim Semester 2020/2021. All courses or subjects need to adopt alternative assessment methods based on the guidelines provided in the recent circulars from the Malaysian Qualifications Agency (MQA), and relevant professional bodies such as the Engineering Accreditation Council (EAC), and the like. These assessments will not require any physical face-to-face sessions. Flexibility will be given to change assessment methods from centre-based final examinations into a series of continuous assessments according to the course or subject needs.

This document is intended to serve as a guideline for students attending VIRTUAL LEARNING (VL) at UNITEN. Due to the current COVID-19 situation, VL has been introduced at UNITEN to cater to the needs of students and academics alike. As and when it is being implemented, Virtual learning is a great option for many students and can be a very effective way to learn. Because taking virtual courses is quite different from taking courses in your traditional face-to-face classroom, it is good to know what you are getting into and what kind of support you will need to be successful.
To fully understand the terms and concepts related to how courses are being handled and conducted, it is important especially for students to read this guide. It will help for students to able to:
- Describe what is VL
- Explain TWO (2) approaches to VL
- Identify roles and responsibilities for VL
All taught postgraduate courses offered by College of Graduate Studies (COGS) will be conducted virtually. Supervision of research students are to be continuously conducted online. All academic requests and processes, such as student registration, supervisor selection, thesis submission, examination scheduling, progress report, proposal defence and Viva-Voce will also be conducted online.
Special considerations for Face-to-Face mode of Teaching, Learning and Assessment
In order to meet the requirements of professional bodies such as the Engineering Accreditation Council (EAC) and the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA), several courses or subjects have been identified as necessary to be conducted face-to-face (students and lecturer present in class) during Interim Semester 2020/2021. Laboratory or Practical Training
Laboratory Training or Practical Training should be carried out in virtual learning mode by practising online simulation methods. However, for laboratory sessions that require hands-on and face-to-face teaching and learning, the grade Belum Selesai (BS) or “Incomplete” will be given until laboratory evaluation or practical training is completed in Interim Semester 2020/2021 or extended until Semester 1, 2020/2021.
Industrial Training may include “Work From Home” (WFH) for students affected by the MCO or the Enhanced Movement Control Order (EMCO) and can be counted as part of their training period.
For Accounting programmes, Industrial Training can include WFH for students affected by the MCO or the EMCO and can be counted as part of their training period. The alternative forms of assessments are allowed to replace the Industrial Training as long as the intended Learning Outcomes (LO) and Programme Objectives (PO) are achieved.
The Industrial Training can also be substituted by industry-based projects that are related to accounting or auditing tasks, as per MQA recommendation. However, the projects must have adequate support and monitoring by both the industry practitioners and the university, as recommended by the Malaysian Institute of Accountants (MIA) “Temporary Approval by MIA Education Board for Industrial Training Replacement” dated 13 April 2020.
Final year Project (for Engineering programme)
Final Year Project, Capstone Project and/or Integrated Design Project that require only simulation work can be continued. However, some flexibility will be given to students who need to perform hands-on work; they may be allowed to come to campus.
Students are required to consult their supervisors on this matter. For this, students must get clearance from the supervisor and approval of COE administration. Students must also adhere to all safety precautions set by UNITEN COVID-19 task force.
In order to ensure that each course or subject achieves its intended outcomes, each college at UNITEN will follow guidelines and procedures developed for teaching, learning and assessments that are done virtually.
This is in line with the requirements set by the accreditation bodies. UNITEN guidelines and procedures have also taken into account the Malaysian Qualifications Agency (MQA) guidelines issued for the MCO and post-MCO periods.

In order to ensure sufficient protection against COVID-19, the university has already put in place guidelines and standard operating procedures that minimize the risk of spread.
