The Leaders

Governance and Leadership

Universiti Tenaga Nasional (UNITEN) is a leading private university in Malaysia, established to support national human capital development in engineering, technology, management, and related disciplines. The University operates within a structured governance framework that upholds accountability, transparency, and effective institutional leadership.

UNITEN is wholly owned by Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB), Malaysia’s national electricity utility, and its governance structure reflects strong linkages between academic excellence, industry relevance, and national development priorities. Through this ownership, UNITEN benefits from strategic alignment with industry needs while maintaining its academic autonomy and integrity.

The University is governed through a formal system of oversight comprising governing bodies and senior leaders with experience across academia, industry, and the public sector. These bodies are responsible for setting strategic direction, ensuring sound governance practices, and safeguarding the long-term sustainability of the institution.

At the apex of the University’s leadership structure, the Chancellor serves as the ceremonial head of UNITEN and represents the University at official and formal occasions. The Chancellor is supported by Pro-Chancellors who assist in ceremonial responsibilities and contribute to governance at the board level.

UNITEN’s governance and management framework clearly delineates roles and responsibilities between governing bodies and executive management. This structure supports effective decision-making, responsible administration, and continuous institutional improvement in fulfilment of UNITEN’s academic mission and societal responsibilities.

The Chancellor is the ceremonial head of Universiti Tenaga Nasional (UNITEN) and serves as the principal representative of the university at official and formal occasions. In this role, the Chancellor symbolises the university’s values, traditions, and standing within the higher education landscape, while providing institutional leadership at a ceremonial level.

The Chancellor is supported by Pro-Chancellors, who assist in carrying out ceremonial duties and represent the university at designated events when required. The Pro-Chancellors also play a governance role through their involvement at the board level, contributing experience, insight, and strategic perspective in support of the university’s long-term direction.

Together, the Chancellor and Pro-Chancellors strengthen UNITEN’s governance framework by reinforcing continuity, institutional stewardship, and alignment with the university’s mission, while maintaining a clear distinction between ceremonial leadership and executive management responsibilities.
