Designing Effective Notes for Your Students : Empower Your Teaching with Purposeful, Student-Centred Note Design

Synopsis

This is a hands-on training programme specially designed for college and university lecturers who are keen to enhance their teaching materials by creating student-friendly notes. This workshop introduces the foundational principles of Cognitive Load Theory (CLT) and demonstrates how thoughtful instructional design can reduce unnecessary mental load on students. Participants will explore five key elements of effective note design and will apply their learning by creating actual course notes using Canva, a user-friendly design platform. The aim is to produce notes that are not only visually appealing but also promote clarity, comprehension, and motivation in learners.

Course Highlights
  1. Explain the basic principles of Cognitive Load Theory and its relevance to instructional material design.
  2. Identify the five critical elements in designing effective notes for student learning.
  3. Apply strategies to reduce extraneous cognitive load in their teaching notes.
  4. Use Canva to design clear, engaging, and student-friendly learning materials.
  5. Evaluate and improve their instructional notes based on student-centred design principles.
Target Participants College & university lecturers who want to improve their notes design so that their students want to read their notes.
