UNITEN Strengthens International Research Ties at High-Level JCC Meeting in Japan

TOKYO, 8 June, 2026 – Universiti Tenaga Nasional (UNITEN) reaffirmed its commitment to international scientific advancement through its active participation in the Science and Technology Research Partnership for Sustainable Development (SATREPS) international research framework.
The Joint Coordination Committee (JCC) convened a high-level meeting at the JST Annex Building in Tokyo, bringing together key institutional stakeholders from UNITEN, Universiti Teknikal Malaysia Melaka (UTeM), and Japan’s Kindai University.
The primary objective of the meeting was to review and evaluate milestone progress for the project titled "Real-Time Lightning 3D Imaging and Forecasting Project for Sustainable and Reliable Supply of Energy and Storm Disaster Early Warning" or commercially known as the RTL-3D Kilat Project. The session concluded with the signing of formal documents, officially reaffirming each institution's strategic commitment to the ongoing collaboration.
The proceedings commenced with opening addresses delivered by Prof. Ir. Dr. Vigna Kumaran Ramachandaramurthy, Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research & Innovation) of UNITEN; Prof. Dr. Zahriladha Zakaria, Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research & Innovation) of UTeM; and Ms. Komiya Izumi, Manager of the SATREPS Group within the Department of International Affairs at the Japan Science and Technology Agency (JST).
Following the opening remarks, the committee received detailed technical updates from the principal university representatives to ensure operational alignment across all ongoing project deliverables. Presentations were delivered by Assoc. Prof. Ir. Dr. Farah Hani Nordin (UNITEN), Prof. Dr. Mohd Riduan Ahmad (UTeM), and Prof. Takeshi Morimoto (Kindai University).
Organizers expressed their appreciation to SATREPS, the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), the Ministry of Higher Education (MOHE) Malaysia, and all collaborative partners for their continued administrative and financial support.
The meeting marked a significant operational milestone for UNITEN to demonstrate an unconventional commitment to pioneering future-ready energy grids. This collaboration represented a decisive step forward in international research, disaster resilience, and energy sector innovation for all participating institutions.
