UNITEN Hosts Tan Sri Leo Moggie 6th Lecture Series 2026, exploring AI and the Earth and the Future of Energy

Universiti Tenaga Nasional (UNITEN) proudly continued its honorable legacy by hosting the Tan Sri Leo Moggie 6th Lecture Series 2026 on 24 June 2026 at the National Energy Centre (NEC), UNITEN.
Established under the prestigious Tan Sri Leo Moggie Distinguished Chair in Energy Informatics, the event was organized in collaboration with the Institute of Informatics and Computing in Energy (IICE). This year’s installment featured a captivating keynote by Professor Cedric John from Queen Mary University of London, United Kingdom, who dove deep into the intersection of technology and geology with his lecture titled “Beneath the Surface: AI, The Earth and Our Energy Future.”
The lecture series serves as a vital platform for continuous educational and intellectual discourse, directly supporting Malaysia's ambitious energy transition goals. Welcoming the attendees, Emeritus Professor Dato’ Dr. Halimah Badioze Zaman, the Holder of the Distinguished Chair in Energy Informatics, highlighted the shift in modern research methodologies:
“Traditional methods alone are no longer sufficient. Artificial Intelligence is now enabling researchers to discover more data, uncover patterns that were previously invisible, and help create faster solutions for a rapidly changing world,” said Prof. Halimah.
Professor John’s lecture shed light on how the Earth’s natural treasures, such as critical minerals, are transformed into usable energy and how AI helps not only gather data but also helps geologists rethink their approach to their science. While advanced technology and AI have significantly improved the efficiency of locating these vital minerals, Professor John reminded the audience of a critical truth: AI is powerful, but it lacks genuine human intelligence.
The insightful session was further enriched by the presence and contributions of Professor John’s doctoral researchers and students in geological sciences.
