INSTITUTE OF POWER ENGINEERING (IPE)

Established in 2005, the Institute of Power Engineering (IPE) is UNITEN’s flagship research institute for advanced power and energy systems. IPE supports Malaysia’s evolving energy landscape through multidisciplinary research, innovation, consultancy, testing, professional training and close industry collaboration.

Its expertise spans the power system value chain, including generation, transmission, distribution, smart grids, distributed energy resources, renewable energy integration, electric mobility, energy efficiency, high-voltage engineering, real-time simulation, artificial intelligence, advanced metering, photonics, communications and electrical safety. With 44 expert members organised into 10 strategic research groups, the institute combines deep technical capability with practical industry relevance.

IPE is supported by advanced facilities for high-voltage testing, real-time grid simulation, hardware-in-the-loop validation, smart-grid demonstration, advanced metering and communication testing, and digital-twin and AI applications. Through collaboration with utilities, government agencies, technology providers and international partners, IPE translates research into deployable solutions, technical standards, roadmaps and capacity-building programmes that strengthen grid reliability, system resilience and the transition towards a secure, intelligent and sustainable power sector.
