Signature Projects
IPE’s signature projects demonstrate its capabilities in grid modernisation, distributed energy resources, electric mobility, power system intelligence, high-voltage technologies and digital utility infrastructure.
IPE’s projects include the Smart Grid Regulatory Framework Development, Hybrid Energy Storage Systems for Renewable Integration, and the Sustainable Green Island Initiative and Distribution Network Analytics Masterplan. The institute also developed the Distribution Network’s DER Integration Manual, 2024 Edition, with Tenaga Nasional Berhad. The manual provides standardised engineering requirements and best practices for integrating distributed energy resources, supporting safer and more reliable implementation by utilities, developers and consultants.
IPE’s work covers electric vehicle charger design for Grid-to-Vehicle and Vehicle-to-Grid and wireless charging applications, national EV fleet rollout planning, grid-impact studies, battery cooling and thermal monitoring, and charging-location optimisation.
Representative projects include second-life battery applications, self-healing grid development, load forecasting and stability studies, energy transition strategies for distribution networks, sustainable energy management frameworks, AI-based energy monitoring and hospital energy benchmarking. IPE has also developed digital-twin and AI-based solutions for transformer monitoring and condition assessment.
IPE’s projects include advanced insulation materials, lightning-risk mapping, cable fault detection, AI-based fault classification, protection simulation, digital twins, Private LTE for Advanced Metering Infrastructure, smart-grid communication testbeds and fibre-optic fault detection. In collaboration with URND, IPE also developed the UNITEN FlashEscape System, a motorised remote-controlled circuit-breaker extraction system designed to enable switchgear operation from outside the arc-flash boundary and improve electrical safety.
