INSTITUTE OF NUCLEAR ENERGY (INE)

Established in 2023, the Institute of Nuclear Energy (INE) is UNITEN’s multidisciplinary platform for research and innovation in nuclear science, nuclear energy systems, radiation applications and related strategic studies. The institute supports Malaysia’s long-term energy security and low-carbon development by bringing together expertise in nuclear engineering, radiation science, energy systems, policy analysis and human factors engineering.

INE’s research spans nuclear power plant siting and infrastructure assessment, advanced reactor and core design, nuclear–solar hybrid energy system, thermal hydraulics, radiation protection and measurement, nuclear security and safeguards, environmental and radiological impact assessment, nuclear materials, and regulatory and economic analysis.

Its specialised facilities include a Radiation Transport Modelling Laboratory, a Nuclear Spectrometry Laboratory and a Human Factors Engineering Laboratory, enabling technical assessment, modelling, safety-related studies and capability development. Working closely with Tenaga Nasional Berhad, as well as national and international partners, INE contributes to policy support, public engagement, curriculum development, professional training and applied projects such as nuclear power plant site studies, tropical nuclear–renewable hybrid energy systems and nuclear battery development.
